The Problem with Low-Profile Tires

Traditional tires have a tall sidewall (the rubber area between the wheel rim and the tread). That tall sidewall acts as a secondary shock absorber, flexing and squishing to absorb impacts from potholes, bumps, and curbs.

Low-profile tires, by design, have a very short sidewall. Because there is less rubber to compress, they offer much less cushioning. When you hit a rolled curb with low-profile tires, the impact is transferred more directly to your wheel rims, your suspension, and ultimately, you and your passengers.

  • Cracked Alloys: Modern alloy wheels are brittle. A hard strike can crack them, requiring a complete replacement.
  • Sidewall Bubbles: The impact can damage the internal structure of the tire, causing a dangerous bubble that requires immediate tire replacement.

Replacing a single modern alloy wheel and low-profile tire can easily cost hundreds.
