How Repeated Scraping Can Damage Your Driveway

We’ve shared a lot of information about how scraping your driveway can damage your car, truck, RV, trailer, or other vehicles. However, we haven’t spent much time addressing how scrapes from these vehicles can damage your driveway. In fact, without a curb ramp, your driveway surface may suffer from repeated scraping that will damage your driveway by:

  • Causing unsightly marks and gouges.
  • Damaging any sealant or protective barrier on your concrete or asphault.
  • Allowing deterioration of the driveway material that can lead to expensive repairs.

Let’s look at some of the ways repeated scraping can damage your driveway and how to prevent it from happening.

Driveway Scrapes Are Ugly

The most obvious damage is the visible scrapes, which can range from surface scratches to deep gouging in the asphalt or cement. These scrapes change the surface texture of the driveway, causing it to stand out and look bad. Once the scrapes are there, it’s difficult to repair the surface so the damage isn’t visible. Patching compounds can provide a temporary repair but are still noticeable and eventually flake off. That leaves you with a choice to live with the damage or replace the damaged section of your driveway, which can cost thousands of dollars.

Scrapes Ruin Driveway Sealant

Another less visible type of issue is damage to the driveway’s sealant or protective coating. If your driveway has an asphalt or concrete sealant to protect it, that sealant will become compromised if it’s scraped or damaged. Once the sealant is damaged, it no longer protects the driveway from moisture, UV rays, chemical pollutants, or other harmful elements. As a result, that sealant or protective barrier will need to be reapplied.

Surface Damage And Further Breakdown

Finally, repeated scrapes will lead to more damage and further breakdown of your driveway’s surface. Each additional scrape causes more damage to your driveway and can lead to cracks or a crumbling surface. If you live in an area with cold temperatures, water penetration will cause cracks or spalling, leading to crumbling concrete. Asphalt driveways suffer pitting and crumbling, which can create potholes or cause driveway sections to erode.
